Business QuickLogic adds sensor management to ArcticLink

QuickLogic has added an SRAM-based configurable logic array to its ArcticLink CSSPs to control sensors.

QuickLogic says that the chip integrates sensor management and fusion, optimises application processor communication and enables always-on context awareness while keeping the IC’s power consumption to approximately 1% of system power.

The usual microprocessor-based or microcontroller-based ASSP which perform these functions cannot operate at low enough power to keep the impact on battery life below 1%, says QuickLogic.

The IC communicates with multi-axis sensors such as accelerometers, magnetometers, gyroscopes, ambient light sensors and pressure sensors.

To create the sensor hub, QuickLogic coupled a micro-coded state machine for front-end sensor management with a low power CISC-based ALU for real-time sensor data processing, and the programmable logic array to off-load the management and computing of sensor data from the apps processor.

A software tool allows developers to design, simulate and map their algorithms in an energy-efficient implementation.

“Designers have been asking for a sensor hub that can provide the computing power necessary at 1% of system power, and we have answered their requests,” says QuickLogic vp Brian Faith.
