Kenneth Cole Productions, Inc, as it was officially titled became what is known as an American fashion house at the time. Things were not an easy start for the company, which started as a shoe company, rather than a fashion line. In fact, Kenneth Cole watches would not be added for some time. In order to get his company's brand out there, Mr. Cole wanted the ability to preview his line of shoes at the prestigious Market Week, which took place at the Hilton Hotel in New York. However, he could not afford to purchase a hotel room at the location, nor could he afford a showroom to show his display. So, he asked about getting a trailer and placing it two blocks from the Hilton Hotel. Unfortunately, this was not allowed by the city, and these types of permits were only given to those who were either production companies or utility companies. Undeterred, Kenneth Cole changed the name of his company to include the term "production" and applied for a permit on the grounds that he was filming a full length movie called, "The Birth of a Shoe Company." His success was unfounded. Not only did he shoot that film, but he also sold some 40,000 shoes within just two days.
Kenneth Cole watches were added to the mix of products that the designer offered which would also include both men and women clothing and shoes as well. The watches fell under the line called Kenneth Cole Reaction Line. You will also find his pieces under other lines including the Kenneth Cole New York Line, Kenneth Cole Unlisted, Tribeca, and Bongo.
Kenneth Cole is still active in the company's success, owning nearly all of the voting rights within the company and 45 percent of the company's shares as well. Since the company's very modest beginnings, Kenneth Cole watches, clothing and footwear have been sold around the globe successfully.
