Business, General BT and Verizon discuss the software telco at ECOC

Executives from major operators like BT and Verizon will be speaking at the Market Focus Theatre at the ECOC Exhibition in London later this month (23-25 September).

The hot topic seems to be software-defined networking (SDN) in telecoms networks and Chris Bilton, BT’s director of research and technology, will consider whether the software telco is just a pipe dream.

To what extent can operators use SDN and network functions virtualisation (NFV) to orchestrate operations across multiple types of network protocols, applications and equipment in their networks? Glen Wellbrock, the director in charge of Verizon’s optical network architecture, will provide a second operator perspective on when and where SDN can be applied to optical transport.
