Embedded Systems Freescale adds v8 architecture to ARM MCU roadmap

Freescale has opened the lid on plans for its ARM-based i.MX rags if microcontrollers, which it said have been “especially popular among automotive customers, with eight of the world’s top 10 automotive OEMs today leveraging i.MX processors for their advanced driver information systems platforms”.

According to the firm: during the next 18 months:

There will be an i.MX 8 series based the ARM v8 architecture and made on a 28nm process “targeting highly advanced driver information systems [infographics] and other multimedia-intensive embedded applications and designed to exceed the requirements of automotive OEMs for years to come”.

i.MX 7 series microcontrollers will be based on the existing v7 architecture, the architecture that emerged from ARM alongside ‘Cortex’ branding, also made on a 28nm process and “designed for Interntet-of-Things applications, point of sale products and a host of other cost-sensitive embedded applications,” said Freescale. “We expect i.MX 7 series solutions for cost-sensitive markets to be a key driver of our long-term i.MX portfolio expansion.”

It also said that energy efficiency will be a feature of i.MX 7 chips.

Lastly, there will be ‘next-generation’ i.MX 6 products: v7-based 4nm chips for “telematics, infotainment and other graphically rich embedded applications”.

More information including product specifications will, said Freescale, be available in 2014.
